Chinchinim is a beautiful village situated on the banks of the River Sal in the Salcete district of Goa, India. It is known to be the biggest rural village of Goa having a predominant Catholic population. It is bordered by the villages of Assolna and Cuncolim to its south and Navelim to its north. One can see a lot of Goan mansions here and also a number of small cottages that have typical features of a Goan village life.
Chinchinim is known as Chinchone in Konkani and is known to have got its name from a Portuguese version of Chinch-oneam. Chinch means a tamarind tree in Konkani and according to many it is possible that the village was full of these tamarind trees in the olden days. However according to some people the name Chinchinim originated as a result of the local deity known as Chinchinath from one of the four temples that were present in the area. In 1567 these temples were destroyed by the Portuguese.
There is a church in Chinchinim known as the church of Our Lady of Good Hope which was built in 1627. In 1739 during the Maratha invasion it was burnt and the repairs were done in the following years. Earlier there also existed a church that was built by the Jesuits and dedicated to St. Anne. This church was known to have been built with the contributions from the communidade of the village and the neighbouring villages. However during the Muslim invasions it was burnt.
Chinchinim is also famous for the feast of Mount Mary that is celebrated every year which attracts thousands of devotees. A fair is held on the occassion and one can witness the traditional sweet marts and stalls displaying toys and many other items at the market area.
Chinchinim has a chapel known as the St Anthony's chapel which stands on the ruins of an earlier Hindu temple at Deussa. There are also a number of places to visit while at Chinchinim including Loyola-Furtado's palacio which is open to visitors on request. There is also a bazaar area in Chinchinim which forms a central part of the village where all minor roads end. In the vicinity one can also find high schools, a post office, a football ground, a hospital, a panchayat ghor, a rural telephone exchange and a fish market.
